Tagua, also known as “vegetable ivory,” comes from the seed of the palm Phytelephas, native of South America. It has been used for indigenous cultures during ages, it became popular in the XIX century, as eco-friendly alternative to the animal ivory. Ecuadorian artisans transform it into buttons, jewels and figurines, keeping alive a sustainable tradition.
